Can Dogs And Cats Get Asthma?

cats and dogs with asthmaWhile it may seem like asthma is strictly a human problem, that isn’t the case. Dogs and cats both can become asthmatic.

Just like humans asthma is  caused by breathing tubes being irritated but allergens. This can cause your pets throat to be swollen and restricted.

This could be pollen,chemicals, or even a cold or virus.

Cats generally have worse asthma than dogs and female cats are more likely to have asthma than male cats. Overweight and older animals are more at risk for asthma.



What Do You Need To Look For?

Dogs with asthmaIt can be tough to tell if your cat or dog has asthma. The most common symptom of asthma is coughing, however coughing is a symptom of many different problems.

As your animal tries to breathe their lungs become swollen and filled with mucus, and it makes it very hard to breathe.

With cats it might look like they are trying to cough up a hairball but n hairball comes out.

Some other symptoms for dogs and cats:

  1. Loss of appetite
  2. Wheezing
  3.  Weight loss

In cats they can also become lethargic and are at risk for anorexia. Dogs can also show these signs:

  1. Trouble breathing
  2. Open mouth breathing
  3. Dry cough
  4. Trouble with exercise

Smaller dogs in general have worse health than bigger dogs and the true is with asthma too. Smaller dogs are more at risk to develop asthma.

So How Do You Treat Asthma?

Asthma is treated in the same way that we as humans are. Cats and dogs are treated by oral medication or asthma inhalers.

If you know what your pets are allergic too it is important to keep them away from those irritants.

While under control asthma isn’t a big issue, but it can become deadly if untreated. It is highly unlikely that your pet is allergic to you.

You may be asked to keep a diary on your pet and write down what happened when they had the asthma attack. Things they ate, where they were, or anything else out of the ordinary.
