Lupus can be a very debilitating disease, and can be very painful for the person. One of the hardest thing about lupus is that there aren’t many signs even exists. Lupus can show up in one test and not in the same test the next day.
People with lupus may even look healthy even though they are not. One of the only visual signs of lupus is the malar rash also known as the butterfly rash (they call it butterfly rash because of the shape of the rash).
This is also why many lupus organizations bear the symbol of the butterfly. These rashes typically show up on a person cheek bones, chest, and sometimes the hands.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system will attack vital organs and tissues. However, noone really knows what causes these rashes.
Malar Rash Treatment

– Sometimes your doctor will prescribe a cream with steroids. This will help with the inflammation and itch you may have. Although it is very rare that your malar rash itches.
-Your doctor may also prescribe medicine without steroids, and drugs that suppress the immune system.
-You should avoid bug spraying chemicals, silica, and mercury as these can make the condition worse.
-You can also apply vitamin E to the area to help with the pain and itchy feeling associated with butterfly rashes.
